Ministry Description

The school trains students who are called to minister at institutions such as hospitals, police forces, military forces, prisons, schools, and colleges and in public services for emergency and disaster relief.

Tenwek Hospital International School of Chaplaincy was founded as L. Nelson Bell Chaplaincy School in 1991 by the late Dr. Ernie Steury, who understood the critical need for spiritual care of patients to be integrated with the medical care offered at the hospital. The school has graduated over 200 students from Kenya, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, Uganda, Tanzania, and the USA. The school is under the management of Tenwek Hospital, which is an institution of Africa Gospel Church Kenya.

  • Tenwek Hospital began as a small clinic in the 1930s and is now one of the largest Protestant mission hospitals in Kenya. It is located 140 miles west of Nairobi in the fertile highlands of the Bomet District.
  • Working under the motto “We Treat - Jesus Heals,” Tenwek’s staff treats more than 11,000 inpatients and 80,000 outpatients annually and also performs approximately 3,000 major surgeries and 2,500 deliveries each year.
  • In addition to the medical work being done at Tenwek, several thousand people find Christ as Savior each year, and many more are impacted through the hospital’s compassionate ministries and training programs.
