Building friendships which point children, youth, and adults to Christ is the emphasis of the Taylor Community Center.

While WGM missionaries have been ministering to the people of McAllen, Texas, and Mexico since 1946, the idea for a community center on the border was first introduced in the 1980s. This vision was finally realized when Taylor Community Center opened in 2005 for community-based outreach.

Taylor Community Center seeks to share the love of Christ through offering recreation, education, clothing, resources, and friendship to children, youth, and adults of the Rio Grande Valley.

Our newly renovated gym and classroom areas are utilized for discipleship classes, conferences, joint church youth gatherings, education, library and tutoring resources, as well as rentals for local sports teams, church groups, and ministries.

TCC ministries have recently expanded into the original school building which now houses our community clothing closet, children’s Bible activities room, and our local Pregnancy Resource Center.

The soccer fields of Taylor Community Center host the Soccer Lions Academy, adult and youth soccer games, and community outreach events.

We share the hope only found in God with individuals and families to transform our community.

Ministries offered through TCC include

Friendship Evangelism: Opportunities for relationship building arise naturally through conversations beside the soccer field and the volleyball/basketball court. The community is coming to us as gym rentals to community sports teams and like-minded ministries have expanded. Soccer practices and games are family events as the players, parents, siblings, and even grandparents attend. Simple talks around picnic tables and on bleachers provide opportunities to share the love of Jesus, learn about the felt needs of our community members, and offer hope through God.

Children’s Ministries: Whether it is through the Bible lessons, activities, and childcare during women’s discipleship or Mom’s Day Out, the Bible Club offered while moms are shopping at the Sparrow’s Nest, or special events, local children are hearing the Gospel message and are being challenged to learn Christian songs and memorize scripture. The children return excited to participate and learn more about God’s Word.

Homeschool Community: We have had the privilege of hosting the Classical Conversations Community—South McAllen at TCC since August of 2022. Classes meet each Friday at TCC. Elementary and junior high students are learning through a classical model while growing in their faith to glorify God in their homes and community.

The H.O.P.E homeschool group also utilizes our facilities for their weekly P.E. classes.

Adult Education and Discipleship Classes: Classes are offered several weeks at a time with the goal of equipping men and women to live out a practical and biblical faith in Jesus Christ. Individuals are learning what it means to pray and study the Bible for themselves and to live as citizens of God’s kingdom. Some students are accepting God’s call to start discipleship groups of their own, thus multiplying the ministry outside our walls.

Crown of Glory—Senior Adults Ministry: The senior adults of our community are welcomed to fellowship together at TCC once each month over games and refreshments. TCC neighbors are enjoying fellowship and inviting their friends. Relationships are being built, and God’s Word is also shared.

Kingdom Builders: Local church pastors and leaders are welcomed to come together for monthly times of prayer and encouragement. We partner with other Bible believing ministries and share our resources to accomplish God’s work together in unity and build up God’s kingdom together.

Youth in Locomotion: The youth of our local churches are encouraged with times of recreation, fellowship, food, worship, and hearing the Word of God. These bimonthly gatherings are a joyful time for young people seeking loving Christian community.

Soccer Lions Academy: Soccer is the main sport of interest in McAllen, Texas. Soccer Lions Academy (SLA) is in the heart of McAllen, strategically located to offer services to families from all over the Rio Grande Valley. SLA offers practice twice a week for young children and a safe environment for exercise and training year-round. The academy participates in a league every spring and has had success over the years as our quality coaching is coupled with relevant life lessons. Above all, Jesus is proclaimed and made known to many families every year.

Sparrow’s Nest Boutique: There are tremendous needs in McAllen, Texas, and the missionary staff realizes that when people’s physical needs are met, they begin to recognize and seek help for their spiritual needs as well. The Sparrow’s Nest clothing closet currently offers low-income families a place where they can purchase clothing at a very low cost. This ministry has built TCC recognition and trust. The leaders build relationships, point people to Jesus as the Provider, and seek to teach recipients personal stewardship.

Pregnancy Resource Center: The local Pregnancy Resource Center (PRC) is now operating out of the Taylor Community Center. They are committed to serve women and their families by providing free holistic care and guiding them to a place of hope and expectancy. We are excited to partner with the Pregnancy Resource Center as they counsel women to choose abundant life in Christ for themselves and their families.
