Building friendships that point children, youth, and adults to Christ is the emphasis of the Taylor Community Center. While WGM missionaries have been ministering to the people of McAllen, Texas, and Mexico since 1946, the idea for a community center on the border was first introduced in the 1980s. This vision was finally realized when Taylor Community Center opened in 2005 for community-based outreach.

Taylor Community Center seeks to share the love of Christ through offering recreation, education, clothing, resources, and friendship to children, youth, and adults of the Rio Grande Valley. Our newly renovated gym and classroom areas are utilized for discipleship classes, conferences, joint church youth gatherings, adult and elementary education, and Gospel Martial Arts Union classes, as well as rentals for local sports teams.

TCC ministries have recently expanded into the original school building, which now houses our community clothing closet, a tutoring resource room, and children’s Bible activities room. We are also preparing to open an office for immigrant legal assistance in this space. The soccer fields of Taylor Community Center host the Soccer Lions Academy, adult soccer games, and community outreach events.

We share the hope only found in God with individuals and families to transform our community. Ministries offered through TCC include:

Friendship Evangelism: Opportunities for relationship building arise naturally through conversations beside the soccer field and the volleyball/basketball court. The community is coming to us as gym rentals to community sports teams and like-minded ministries have expanded. Soccer practices and games are family events as the players, parents, siblings, and even grandparents attend. Simple talks around picnic tables and on bleachers provide opportunities to share the love of Jesus, learn about the felt needs of our community members and offer hope through God.

Children’s Ministries: Whether it is through the monthly Bible lessons and activities during women’s meetings, the Bible Club offered while moms are shopping at the Sparrow’s Nest, or special events, local children are hearing the Gospel message and are being challenged to learn Christian songs and memorize Scripture. The children return excited to participate and learn more about God’s Word. Many children come from the neighborhood and non-Christian homes.

Classical Conversations Community—South McAllen: We have the privilege of hosting a homeschool community group on our properties once a week, beginning in August of 2022. Children from ages four through thirteen are learning through a classical model while growing in their faith and glorifying God in their homes and community.

Adult Education and Discipleship Classes: Classes are offered several weeks at a time with the goal of equipping men and women to live out a practical and biblical faith in Jesus Christ. New Direction workshops are offered monthly with different topics to equip women in all aspects of their lives. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are currently offered in the summers.

Gospel Martial Arts Union: Students ages six and up study martial arts katas, grappling, and self-defense techniques while receiving biblical instruction.

Soccer Lions Academy: Soccer is the main sport of interest in McAllen, Texas. Soccer Lions Academy (SLA) is in the heart of McAllen, strategically located to offer services to families from all over the Rio Grande Valley. SLA offers practice twice a week for young children and a safe environment for exercise and training year-round. The academy participates in a league every spring and has had success over the years as our quality coaching is coupled with relevant life lessons. Above all, Jesus is proclaimed and made known to many families every year.

Sparrow’s Nest: There are tremendous needs in McAllen, Texas, and the missionary staff realizes that when people’s physical needs are met, they begin to recognize and seek help for their spiritual needs as well. The Sparrow’s Nest clothing closet currently offers low-income families a place where they can purchase clothing at a very low cost. This ministry has built TCC recognition and trust. The leaders build relationships, point people to Jesus as the Provider, and seek to teach recipients personal stewardship.
