Kenya: Chogoria Hospital

In 1922, Scottish missionaries founded a medical outpost in the central highlands of Kenya, just east of Mount Kenya. During the next 80 years, the outpost grew into two boarding schools and Chogoria Hospital, a reputable 300-bed facility. Each of the ministries was effective in spreading the gospel of Christ throughout the area.

In 2004, the Scots left Chogoria Hospital under Kenyan management. While the hospital has continued to grow and provide effective medical care, the number of full-trained, missions-minded doctors is small. Currently, only one full-time, residency-trained doctor works at Chogoria.

Training African Doctors

The demand for doctors skilled in advanced medicine is high in Africa; however, the training necessary to develop these skills is in low supply. An African medical student can finish his studies at the highest level available, become a doctor, and still be unprepared to provide sufficient care for his patients. The staff at Chogoria Hospital seeks to serve as the answer to this problem.

At Chogoria, Kenyan doctors study theoretical and practical learning, receiving the experience, training, and discipleship they need to serve through the ministry of healing. This allows them to meet the physical and spiritual needs of those they serve as they minister at Chogoria and as they return to their communities and other parts of Africa.

According to the Christian Institute of Family Medicine of East Africa, Chogoria Hospital presents a strong potential to grow into a missions-oriented teaching hospital. Muslims, animists, agnostics, and Africans from other belief systems go to openly Christian missionary hospitals to receive the treatment they need. This gives Chogoria and other hospitals an open door to spread the gospel and Christ’s love.

WGM missionaries are working with Chogoria Hospital help train African doctors. A Family Medicine Residency program was added in 2016, which functions  in partnership with Kabarak University and Tenwek Hospital to train East African medical professionals for medical missions service throughout the continent.

Additional Impact

Chogoria Hospital is currently owned and managed by the Presbyterian Church of East Africa. Administratively, the hospital has three core departments: the main hospital, community health, and Clive Irvine College of Nursing.

In addition to outpatient and inpatient services, Chogoria offers general surgery, orthopaedics, maternity services, HIV/AIDS care, dental and eye clinics, palliative care, a children’s trauma and burn unit, and a pharmacy. The community health department manages projects in the districts of Tharaka, Meru South Maara, and South Imenti and offers technical supervision to 30 rural health clinics.

Pray

Pray that the ministry of Chogoria Hospital will equip doctors to treat their patients’ physical ailments while also meeting their spiritual needs.

Pray that the hospital will be a catalyst for revival in Kenya and throughout Africa.
