Kenya: Chogoria Hospital

Start a Campaign

In 1922, Scottish missionaries founded a medical outpost in the central highlands of Kenya, just east of Mount Kenya. During the next 80 years, the outpost grew into two boarding schools and Chogoria Hospital, a reputable 300-bed facility. Each of the ministries was effective in spreading the Gospel of Christ throughout the area.

In 2004, the Scottish missionaries left Chogoria Hospital under Kenyan management. Missionaries from WGM and other mission organizations have been serving in Chogoria since 2015. Alongside other mission-minded hospital staff, they are committed to providing quality Christlike care to patients as well as training the next generation of doctors for Africa.

Training African Doctors

WGM missionaries are working with Chogoria Hospital to help train African doctors. A Family Medicine Residency program began in 2016, which functions in partnership with Kabarak University, to train East African medical professionals beyond their medical school training.

Residents, as well as interns, study medicine at Chogoria to receive the experience, training, and discipleship they need to serve through the ministry of healing. This allows them to meet the physical and spiritual needs of patients as they minister at Chogoria and as they return to their communities across Kenya and East Africa.

Additional Impact

Chogoria Hospital is currently owned and managed by the Presbyterian Church of East Africa. In addition to the main hospital, the Clive Irvine College of Health Sciences has multiple nursing programs and an Operating Room technician program.

The hospital offers internal medicine, pediatric, general surgery, orthopedics, gynecologic and maternity services, as well as a six-bed ICU. Additionally, Chogoria has a variety of outpatient services such as an emergency room, urgent care, chronic disease management and specialist clinics, as well as dental and eye clinics, palliative care and HIV/AIDS departments, and a pharmacy.

Pray

Pray that the ministry of Chogoria Hospital will equip doctors to treat their patients’ physical ailments while also meeting their spiritual needs.

Pray that the hospital will be a catalyst for revival in Kenya and throughout Africa.
