Engage in Missions Where You Are

Engage in Missions Where You Are

SPRING/SUMMER 2021    |    2 MINUTE READ

Have you ever thought about becoming a missionary? Do you know a missionary serving cross-culturally? Are you interested in learning more about other cultures and the beautiful diversity of God’s people? Check out the resources we’ve gathered here!

Going to a ministry location might not be a possibility for you right now, but you can still engage in missions right where you are. Maybe your country still has strict COVID restrictions in place. Maybe you’re still in school and can’t uproot your life for missions work just yet. Maybe you’d love to visit a missionary you support, but the timing isn’t quite right.

This past year has required all of us to make adjustments to the way we do life. At WGM, we’ve had to rethink how to do missions when the world is mostly shut down. We’ve been inspired by people who have continued to remain active in missions without the opportunity to serve cross-culturally, at least not in a traditional sense.

If you’re currently in a season of waiting, we have compiled some of our favorite resources for you, from books and a podcast to digital resources and even a Spotify playlist. We believe these will enrich your view of the world God has created and better prepare you when you can go.

Books

Spiritual Survival Handbook for Cross-Cultural Workers by Dr. Robert S. Miller
Miller offers guidance for preparing yourself spiritually for cross-cultural ministry. Whether you’ve served before or are embarking on missions for the first time, you’ll appreciate this perspective on what it takes to thrive in ministry.

What if Jesus Was Serious? by Skye Jethani
Jethani pairs his reflections on Jesus’ teachings with hand-drawn doodles for a refreshing take on the devotional format. This book will help you take a second look at familiar passages of Scripture and be challenged by Jethani’s questions and perspective.

Digital Resources

Recipe Blogs
Yes, you read that right. We’re listing recipes as a resource. Why? Food is a huge part of culture, and trying out some of the recipes we’ve shared on our blog can be a fun way to experience a taste (pun fully intended) of a country before you ever step foot there. Find these recipes on our blog.

Podcast

Global Missions
A podcast is a great way to learn more about engaging in missions. Whether your mission field is down the street or across the globe, you’ll be able to glean wisdom from experts on topics from involving children in missions to managing risk in short-term service.

Spotify Playlist

Worship around the World
Worship is such an important element of a relationship with God. It’s a great way to shape your heart and attitude toward Him and to prepare yourself to hear what He has to say to you. We've created this playlist so you can listen to worship music in Cambodian, Spanish, and Hungarian! By opening yourself up to new cultural influences, you can learn more about the heart of God and the people He loves.
