Tim and Sharon Hawk

Tim and Sharon Hawk followed a call into missions as freshly graduated college students. This calling has spanned the past 42 years of following God’s direction. Tim and Sharon have touched hundreds of lives through teaching and leadership in Latin America and beyond.

They both grew up in strong Christian families. Tim grew up in Honduras, the son of WGM missionaries Donald and Twana Hawk, founders of Escuela El Sembrador, a school for underprivileged Honduran boys. Sharon grew up in Pine River, Minnesota, where her parents raised her and her four sisters in the church. Tim and Sharon met while attending Vennard College (Iowa), and they were married on July 29, 1967.

Tim and Sharon both felt called to missions and were determined to go where God would lead them. “As to giving a specific time when the Lord called to full-time missionary work, I cannot definitely say. It just seems that He has been preparing my life for this type of work,” Tim wrote when he applied to World Gospel Mission in 1967.

After Tim and Sharon graduated from college, they embarked on their missionary journey. Their first assignment took them to Mexico, Honduras, Bolivia, and Argentina. Their two oldest children, Tammy and Cindy, were born during this time. They settled in Honduras, where Tim became the director of El Sembrador and later field director. Their family expanded to include son, Shannon, while in Honduras.

Returning to the States in 1985, Tim and Sharon were offered jobs at WGM headquarters. First working as director of Men With Vision, Tim would later take on the responsibility of the World Connection Department. Sharon worked in the Media Department, helping missionaries put together slides and video presentations.

“Christian service has no boundaries or borders,” Sharon stated in her testimony. This statement ran true when the events of Hurricane Mitch devastated Honduras in 1998. Tim and Sharon returned to Honduras to help rebuild, organizing relief efforts throughout the country. Although they initially planned to stay for only six months, the Hawks ended up remaining in Honduras and Tim was asked to again serve as the field director. In 2006, they transitioned to serve as regional directors in Honduras and Mexico, traveling between the two countries to oversee the ministries.

Tim and Sharon have always had a partnership approach to missions, desiring to empower national believers to serve and lead in the church. “It’s been a joy watching the people we have invested our lives in come into leadership,” Tim said.

Although Tim and Sharon officially retired on July 31, 2010, they have no plans to slow down. Quality time with their six grandchildren will take a high priority upon their retirement, but they plan to return to WGM’s fields to serve as volunteers. The Hawks have never regretted following God’s call in their lives, and they plan to continue working with the people they love so dearly.
