Sherry Andes

Retired Support Staff
By Rachel Pyle, Intern, November 2011

Sherry Andes never felt the call to serve overseas as a missionary; yet, she has helped forward the cause of missions through her years of working behind the scenes at World Gospel Mission’s headquarters in Marion, Indiana.  Missionaries can’t do what God called them to do without the help and support of many “back home,” and Sherry was happy to use her skills in accounting to enable missionaries to serve.

Born and raised in Gas City, Indiana, Sherry was the oldest of three children. She grew up in a Christian home, faithfully attending First United Methodist Church with her family. She graduated third in her class from Mississinewa High School and went on to study business at Ball State University (Indiana). Sherry married her high school sweetheart, Frank, on February 4, 1961.

Sherry has held a variety of jobs throughout the years, including working with her father in the township assessor’s office and serving as church secretary. She also focused her time on raising three children, but once they grew up, she began looking for an outside job. In 1994, Sherry heard about an opening at WGM in the Financial Services Department through a friend at church. Her only apprehension was WGM’s then-rule about women having to wear skirts at the office. She finally applied for the job after a slight push from her friend, and the rule was later dropped.

During her WGM career, Sherry served in medical accounting, working closely with missionaries to help them deal with medical expenses. She appreciated the personal relationships that she was able to build with her fellow employees and enjoyed how her co-workers treated each other like family members, praying and caring for one another.

Although she semi-retired in June 2007, Sherry has continued her employment in medical accounting at WGM headquarters on a part-time basis. Cutting back has allowed her extra time to spend with her husband, children, and seven granddaughters. WGM is thankful to Sherry for her years of service and for using her talents to help in missions and further the kingdom of God.
