Jim and LuAnn Smith

Support Staff
"The Experience of a Lifetime!"
By Beth Muehleisen, Director of Human Resources, June 2022

Jim and LuAnn Smith retired from World Gospel Mission on June 30, 2022, after filling different roles over the last seventeen years. God’s calling to WGM has given them the blessing of living out their dream job.

As a young man, one of Jim’s first experiences with WGM was attending a Men With Vision (MWV) chapter meeting in his local church. Seeing men (and women) praying for, supporting, and promoting missions in the church and through work teams was inspiring. The MWV men were bound together around the cause of using their building skills to make a difference on the mission field. They were so passionate about what they had accomplished, and they knew they were changing lives around the world. Jim had no idea that years later, he and LuAnn would have the opportunity to coordinate the Men with Vision program and continue this work though the annual projects and the Minutemen/Minutewomen programs.

Over the years it has been a privilege for Jim and LuAnn to also work throughout the Northeast region of the U.S. by representing WGM at mission conferences, camps, and MWV events. In many churches, they were often referred to as Mr. and Mrs. WGM! They had such a wonderful time speaking and singing for so many great people and developing relationships that are precious even today.

The Smiths had the privilege of scheduling about 500 meetings for missionaries every year, which not only helped missionaries with their funding, but also gave Jim and LuAnn the opportunity to assist hundreds of pastors and churches in maintaining vibrant mission programs through WGM.

With discipleship being a major focus in their lives, coaching and training missionaries to achieve their passion of answering God’s call to missions has been a way for the Smiths to achieve His calling for their own lives! Getting to know so many missionaries and learning of the work through their stories also helped Jim and LuAnn to see what they did as truly making a global impact for the kingdom of God. Although their involvement was only a small part of the larger picture, they have been so honored to have made a difference in the ministry of missionaries.

Jim shared that Psalm 46:10 is the verse of scripture that has helped him live out a life of obedience to Jesus Christ: “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth” (NIV). LuAnn’s verse is Joshua 1:9, which says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Jim and LuAnn have hearts full of gratitude to God and WGM for the experience of a lifetime! God is already opening other doors of ministry, and they are excited to see what the next chapter in life will be.
