A $37,000 Answer to Prayer

A $37,000 Answer to Prayer

Sometimes God answers prayers very specifically. In 1973, leaders of a church in Japan  had front-row seats to divine provision.

For nearly a quarter of a century, believers attending Immanuel Church in Japan utilized rented quarters in downtown Tokyo. It had always been the vision of Dr. David Tsutada, the founder, to have a permanent site for the Central Church. He died before the dream was realized. His son, Dr. John Tsutada, succeeded him in this pastorate.

In 1973, an excellent building that had been a Catholic monastery became available for purchase. Approximately $150,000 was needed to make the down payment. There was no money in the budget, and the church did not want to seek outside assistance.

Dr. Tsutada met with about a dozen elders for prayer. Feeling led of the Lord, he suggested that each write on a piece of paper the amount he could give on the down payment. The slips were totaled, and they discovered they still lacked $37,000. Could it be that the Lord was trying to tell them they should not buy?

A short time later, one of the elders noticed a tightly folded piece of paper that had been overlooked. He opened it and read, “$37,000.” All rejoiced as it was the exact amount needed. As the elders were rejoicing, they felt a slight earthquake tremor as if God Himself was providing His approval.

The property was purchased and remodeled, and within 12 years it was debt free. The church has produced scores of Christian workers.

“You must each decide in your heart how much to give. And don’t give reluctantly or in response to pressure. ‘For God loves a person who gives cheerfully.’” (2 Corinthians 9:7 NLT)

The Best of the Story: Miraculous Answers to Prayer (published 1993, reprinted 2001) was written by WGM retiree Burnis Bushong. The purpose of the book is to share prayer stories experienced by WGM missionaries over the years. We hope these stories inspire you to pray for missions activities around the world. A new story is posted each month.
