Taylor Community Center on the Texas/Mexico Border

While WGM missionaries have been ministering to the people of McAllen, Texas, and Mexico since 1946, the idea for a community center on the border was first introduced in the 1980s. During a special meeting in 2000, the missionary staff committed to building Taylor Community Center.

TCC offers a safe haven for children and youth to hear the gospel as they participate in after-school and summer activities. Workers at the center believe that if children and youth are reached, the likelihood of reaching entire families for Christ is greater.

“Even though our target is the youth, our ultimate goal is to reach entire families,” shared Bill Allshouse, WGM Mexico field director. “We estimate that within a quarter-mile radius of the center 1,000 families and approximately 3,000 children can be reached for Christ.”

The evangelism of children and youth is extremely important on the Texas/Mexico Border. In this area, about 60 percent of crimes are gang related, so TCC strives to take kids out of the path of gang violence and membership. The center is also connected to Taylor Christian School, which uses the facility during the academic school year.

Ministries offered through TCC include:

Sports Evangelism: Although soccer is currently the only sport offered at TCC, as the Lord provides more volunteers and missionaries, the center plans to have basketball and volleyball programs. The soccer league reaches roughly 40 children and their families. About 80 percent of the kids are home schooled and from the neighborhood while 20 percent attend Taylor Christian School. With practices being held four times a week and games being played on Saturdays, soccer is an open door for reaching entire families for Christ in McAllen.

Children’s Ministries: Whether it’s through the weekly Kids’ Club or summer Vacation Bible School, local children are hearing the gospel message and are being challenged to learn Christian songs and memorize scripture. About one-third of the children come from the neighborhood and non-Christian homes.

Friendship Evangelism: The soccer ministry is again opening doors for ministry to entire families. Join the missionary staff in praying that the Lord will foster these relationships for His glory and give the missionaries wisdom in knowing when and how to share the gospel with those in need.

Men’s Ministries: The missionary staff has a vision to reach out to the men in the community through a Saturday breakfast devotional. Please pray that this desire becomes a reality and that these men can be fed physically while filling their hearts and minds with the Word of God.

Women’s Ministries: This outreach is being planned as an extension of the soccer program. Soccer practice and games are family events as the players, parents, siblings, and even grandparents attend. Simple talks around picnic tables and on bleachers can lead to relationships and evangelism. Please pray that there will be interest in a weekly ladies’ Bible study.

Clothes Closet: There are tremendous needs in McAllen, Texas, and the missionary staff realizes that when people’s physical needs are met, they are more open to learning how they can fulfill their spiritual needs. TCC currently offers low-income families a place where they can receive clothing and some food items free of charge.
