Prayer Reaches Around the World

May 18, 2017

Josh sat on the carpet, staring at the giant white board in the front of the Sunday School room. The teacher, Miss Green, finished writing the names of a few missionaries under a list that said “prayer requests.” The list had gotten long and included missionaries in Asia, South America, Africa, and even the United States.

Josh raised his hand. “Miss Green, will the missionaries know we prayed for them?”

Miss Green put the cap on her marker and smiled. “Well, remember when some missionaries came to visit our church last year? Our church said we would pray for them.”

A girl named Maddie raised her hand and said, “But they don’t even know us! And we don’t know them.”

“That’s the wonderful thing about prayer,” Miss Green replied. “We don’t have to know other Christians to pray for them. Think about this—the sun is far away, but it still helps a plant grow. When we pray for missionaries, even if we’ve never met them, we support their ministry!”

“How do we pray for them?” blurted out Josh’s friend, Chase.

Miss Green sat down in her chair and pulled a Bible from the desk. She opened it, saying, “Do you remember Paul from the Bible? The letter he wrote to the Christians in a place called Thessalonica can give us a clue. When Paul wrote this, he was far away in another city. But he still asked the Thessalonians to pray for him. Listen to 2 Thessalonians 3:1 (NIV). Paul says, ‘As for other matters, brothers and sisters, pray for us that the message of the Lord may spread rapidly and be honored, just as it was with you.’”

“So we can pray for them spreading the gospel,” Josh said.

“And for the new Christians and people hearing about Jesus,” Maddie added.

“That’s right,” Miss Green said. “And Christians around the world may be praying for us, too!”

She opened a drawer and pulled out a stack of colorful papers.

“How about this? Everyone choose a piece of paper and a missionary from the board. Write their name on your paper, and then you can keep it in your room or on the refrigerator as a reminder to keep praying!”

Josh, Maddie, Chase, and the other kids eagerly picked out their favorite color of paper and a missionary from the board. Then they wrote and decorated their papers with markers. Josh drew a big yellow sunshine in the corner of his. When he finished, he  held his drawing uphanded it  to Miss Green. He had chosen a missionary all the way in Japan.

“This is cool!” he said.“It is cool!” said Miss Green. “Through prayer, God lets us be part of ministries around the world.”
