THE APPROACH: A Prayer Podcast for Those Walking with Gen Z

THE APPROACH: A Prayer Podcast for Those Walking with Gen Z

FALL/WINTER 2021    |    2.5 MINUTE READ
KATELAND VERNON, STAFF WRITER

We believe God is on the move in the emerging generation, and that’s why we launched our new podcast, The Approach. In this podcast, we help you understand how Generation Z thinks, how they interact with each other and the church, and—most importantly—how you can pray for Gen Z.

Why is this important?

You have influence with Gen Zers in your community. Whether you lead a group of college students, coach a high school sports team, have younger family members who look up to you, or serve alongside them in your church, our new podcast aids you in praying for a generation of potential missionaries and Christ-followers.

What is each episode like?

The Approach hosts, John Rinehimer and Connor Owen, discuss the latest research and statistics surrounding Gen Z on topics such as identity, trust, and abiding, and each episode will end with a prayer over Gen Z and those who walk with them. Tune in to learn how you can partner with and pray over the next generation to help them grow in their relationship with God and use their gifts and talents for the kingdom.

Why name the podcast The Approach?

This title comes from 1 John 5:14, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us” (NLT). WGM was founded on prayer, and it sustains us to this day. We know that prayer is how movements start, so together, we will approach God in prayer for Gen Z.

Why Gen Z?

Gen Z makes up both the next generation of missionaries and what is possibly the greatest missions opportunity of our lifetime. By investing in Gen Z, we’re investing in the kingdom of God and the future of missions work around the world.

Vision Verse

We will not hide these truths from our children; we will tell the next generation about the glorious deeds of the Lord, about his power and his mighty wonders. For he issued his laws to Jacob; he gave his instructions to Israel. He commanded our ancestors to teach them to their children, so the next generation might know them—even the children not yet born—and they in turn will teach their own children. So each generation should set its hope anew on God, not forgetting his glorious miracles and obeying his commands.
Psalm 78:4–7 (NLT)

Gen Z represents a great opportunity for potentially the largest missions movement in history. In this episode, we talk about the rate at which Gen Z is leaving the church, how that can be turned around, and the role other generations can play in that movement.

Abiding is the dynamic and life-giving process of remaining in Jesus. What is keeping us from abiding in the life of Jesus, though? Are we too distracted—specifically Gen Z? We believe that abiding is more than one spiritual discipline but is a way of life.

Trust is at an all-time low in our world. Having never known a world before 9/11 or a country not in a war, the emerging generation needs adults and mentors who will walk with them during the ups and downs of life so that trust in God can be built.

What types of narratives are the next generation being told? And which ones are they listening to? As we seek to help the next generation find their identity in Christ, we examine the impact of our words. Join us as we pray that Gen Z will begin to find their identity in Christ.
