Radio Lumière in Haiti
Radio Lumière (French for light), which first broadcast on February 20, 1959, now reaches much of Haiti with Christian broadcasting. The network of nine Christian radio stations and one television station was started by World Team and is now owned and operated by the Mission Evangelique Baptiste du Sud d’Haiti (MEBSH) national church and serves all evangelical churches in Haiti.
The station is on the air 24 hours a day, seven days a week. At any one time, Radio Lumière’s audience varies from several thousand to more than 1 million listeners. The station’s programming is Christian and family oriented, with a strong emphasis on evangelism and Christian training. The network also provides educational broadcasting, Christian music and entertainment, and a complete news service.
“It is evident to me that Radio Lumière is operated under the direction of the Holy Spirit,” shared one station listener. “It goes forth with power and the ability to help in transforming desperate lives into lives on fire for God’s truth. Such is the case in my life, as I am in prison for kidnapping. I am a young man of 24 who committed crimes, and I was condemned one year ago to life in prison. Fortunately, Radio Lumière is a prison preacher! Through it, I came to know the unconditional, infinite, and great love of God. I am pleased to tell you that I have turned from my sins to God and received His forgiveness while incarcerated. Keep doing your job!”
Despite the 7.0-magnitute earthquake that shook Haiti on January 12, 2010, Radio Lumière continued broadcasting. Centered in the capital city of Port-au-Prince, Radio Lumière offered a beacon of light and provided hope and needed information to Haitians in their time of need.
An estimated 50 percent of Haitians practice voodoo, a spiritual tradition that played an important role in their independence from France. However, the Lord is working in Haiti, and now more than 40 percent of Haitians have turned their backs on voodoo and have accepted Christ as their true Savior. Almost weekly, Radio Lumière reports of witch doctors turning to Jesus.
Radio Lumière is a powerful evangelistic tool for Haiti as it can reach into homes the church cannot touch. It also plays an important role in encouraging, training, and building up Christians. It is truly spreading “The Light” in Haiti!
