I (Laura) was 27 and Gary was 41 when we gave our hearts to Jesus. By the time Gary became a believer, we had been married almost 22 years and had no children. We became very involved in our home church in Ohio as we taught and discipled new believers. A few years later, we both felt God calling us to do something different. We were hungry to follow Jesus but did not know what the next step was supposed to be. We began to pray and wait. While we were attending a family camp in the summer of 2004, God called us to full-time Christian ministry, but we did not have a clear direction from there.

In 2005, we began attending Vennard College (Iowa), still not knowing what the next step would be. Through a series of events, God made it very clear that He wanted us to follow Him to Honduras. He opened the door for us to partner with World Gospel Mission and minister to the young men and farm workers at Escuela El Sembrador. Gary taught auto mechanics and worked around the farm, and I taught English as a Second Language. We also enjoyed our “home” ministry. Students came to our home to study or just hang out, giving them a break from their dorm life. Students began to “open up” and share about their lives and their relationships (or lack thereof) with Jesus. God gave opportunities for us to share the gospel message, both through the spoken word and the action of love.

As God led us to Honduras to work at El Sembrador, He met huge desires and needs in our lives—kids, family, and community! Ministry at El Sembrador is much more than telling kids about Jesus. It’s sharing our hearts and lives with those around us, loving them, and sharing the gospel. What a joy to serve Jesus!
