Ministry Description
Teaching English as a Second Language has become an outlet for introducing people to Christ worldwide. The same is true in Peru as WGM missionaries are asked, “Can you teach me English?” Whether they are hailing a taxi or buying groceries at the local market, WGM missionaries catch the curiosity of Peruvians with their skin color, accent, and Spanish-speaking skills.
Quick Facts
- To a national taxi driver, learning English means an increase in income for his family as he becomes more competitive in the tourist trade and able to help English speakers when they visit. The majority of taxi drivers work seven days a week and don’t have time to go to church or cannot justify taking time off to go.
- Providing English as a Second Language classes will allow nationals to learn English while giving WGM Peru the opportunity to introduce people to the life-changing love of Christ.
- Many Peruvians rarely have their own Bibles even though they are readily available. Many do not purchase them because of the expense, while others simply follow their Catholic background in which the priest reads the scriptures to them. A Bible in Peru costs $10.
- Crosses take on a different meaning for Peruvians. Every time most Peruvians see a cross, they make the mark of the cross across their chests. This symbolizes their reverence to the cross, not to Christ. Most Peruvians worship the cross because Christ died on it instead of focusing on the fact that Christ died and rose again.
