Sudan

Sudan is one of the world’s most bitterly divided countries, with the rich living in the north and the poor residing in the south. Roughly 70 percent of Sudanese living in the north are Sunni Muslims, and only 5 to 15 percent of Sudanese consider themselves Christian. Join the Mango Ministries team and help build His church in Sudan!

“He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season and its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers” (Psalm 1:3 NASB).

This is the key verse for WGM Sudan as ministries focus on bringing people hope, developing relationships, and empowering people to meet their basic needs in the name of Jesus. Sudan, the largest country in Africa, is comprised of 26 states and is usually divided between North Sudan and South Sudan. Outreach through WGM Sudan is centered in South Sudan and around Mango Ministries, a new initiative with the vision of helping “Sudanese to know Jesus and see Him transform their lives.”

Tribalism, anger, and a post-war mentality make Sudan a very challenging environment to work in. The goal of Mango Ministries is to transform communities by putting down roots, bearing fruit, and multiplying the harvest through church, compassionate, medical, and support ministries.

“We can see what God must envision for the Sudanese,” began WGM missionary Joy Phillips. “Villages at peace with their neighbors, healthy children reaching their educational potential, abundant harvests and food for all, days of productivity for all able-bodied men and women, and vibrant churches where God’s Word is challenging and feeding people and the Body of Christ is reaching those in need.”

Church Empowerment Ministries
During the last 20-plus-year civil war between North and South Sudan, the Sudanese church went through tremendous persecution. Many current church leaders have had minimal training, and it is estimated that less than 20 percent of the people in South Sudan can read and write. WGM Sudan wants to change that by partnering with new and current church leaders to help strengthen their understanding of the Word and to equip them with the resources they need to transform their communities for Christ.

Training is being offered through a biblically based community health and development approach as communities torn apart by violence and anger are invited by WGM Sudan to begin identifying their needs. As relationships are developed, personal, church, and community growth will take place.

Another avenue of training is through Bible storytelling, making the Word of God come alive and easier to understand and share. The passion of WGM Sudan is to train Sudanese leaders to shepherd the church with the goal of transforming lives for eternity.

Transformational Development Ministries
WGM Sudan wants to come alongside targeted communities and lead them through an empowering process of community assessment, local resource recognition, and community planning that will address needs such as:

  • church empowerment
  • preventative and curative healthcare
  • clean water
  • agriculture/food security
  • income-generating activities
  • education

These ministries are currently being developed in Akot. As part of Mango Ministries, community-based, multicultural teams are coming alongside and empowering Sudanese to live with dignity and hope through Jesus Christ.

Medical Ministries
During Sudan’s 20-plus-year civil war that ended in 2005, the country’s infrastructure greatly deteriorated, leaving Sudanese hospitals with inexperienced and untrained staff. The war also left the country with a shortage of medicines and hospital equipment. Based on WGM Kenya’s longstanding experiences with Tenwek Hospital, WGM Sudan has been asked to give assistance to two new missions hospitals in Werkok and Akot in South Sudan. The field is currently looking for doctors, nurses, and specialized volunteers (i.e. lab technologists) who can train and mentor Sudanese healthcare providers at these hospitals.

“Imagine men who have only recently lain down their AK-47 rifles and taken up shovels, hammers, and nails to build rather than kill or be killed,” shared missionary Joy Phillips. “After 20- to 30-plus years of killing, inspiring people to dream of life is more than just a matter of memorizing a Bible verse. At present, the staff [at Memorial Christian Hospital] sees at least 30 to 50 people per day. It is the only facility within two hours’ walking distance.”

Support Ministries
WGM believes there is a place for everyone in missions. Support ministries offer a way for people to find their niche in missions by using their God-given talents and abilities to work hand-in-hand with other missionaries and national Christians.

Some available opportunities include being accountants, treasurers, mechanics, logisticians, administrative assistants, work team coordinators, maintenance workers, and guesthouse hosts. These support roles complement the other ministries on the field.
