Uganda: Buvuma Islands Orphan Scholarships

Start a Campaign

Located on Buvuma Island, Kikongo Primary School was started in 2003 with the purpose of providing a quality primary school education in a Christian atmosphere.

Students

Approximately 270 children, including 170 orphans, attend Kikongo Primary. Many of the orphans attend the school on scholarships, which provide for their tuition, a uniform, school supplies, and meals. However, there are still roughly 60 students who need scholarship support.

Kikongo Primary reaches out to students who are in the American equivalent of first through seventh grades. However, since many of the children have not been able to attend school previously, their ages range from 5 to 15 years old. Most of the children come from families of subsistence farmers and fishermen.

Curriculum

The students’ educations at Kikongo Primary include studying English, reading, math, social studies, science, geography, spelling, and physical education. They also learn about farming, gardening, and animal care. A resident nurse teaches them about health and hygiene education while spiritual education and chapel services are also part of the school’s curriculum.

Following seventh grade, all Ugandan children who plan to continue their education must take a three-day external examination. Kikongo Primary has been the top performing school in the district for these tests for the past several years.

Future

The staff at Kikongo Primary is currently working to expand the library and better equip their classrooms with books and teaching aids. The school is also hoping to begin using solar power, since there is no electricity on the island.

Pray

  • Pray that Jesus will be lifted up and glorified at Kikongo Primary School.
  • Pray that the staff will have opportunities to share Jesus and His love with the students, their families, and members of the community.
  • Pray also that God will provide the funds needed to give more orphans an education.

Give

In Uganda, when a child is orphaned (or the parents are unable to provide care), the focus is often on survival—finding a safe home, getting enough to eat, etc. One crucial and often overlooked need is education. A mere $12 per month, or $144 per year, provides an orphan with a good education, a loving Christian environment, textbooks, supplies, a uniform, and school lunches. Give the kids on the Buvuma Islands hope for today and the future.
