Church Planters'/Pastors' Training Ministries in Uganda

Ministry Info
When WGM missionaries arrived in Uganda in 1992, the main avenue of ministry was church planting through personal evangelism. However, in 1999 a team of missionaries felt the Lord leading them to change from this approach to a method that educated Ugandans to be church planters, lay leaders, and ministers to their own people.

The first training center was opened at Africa Gospel Church Kisugu in the capital city of Kampala. Roughly 10 pastors met once a month for training in Bible, doctrine, and church administration. As news of the training seminars spread, so did the desire of national Christians to be involved. Results from this first training included a church on the Buvuma Islands in the Mukono District, two in Busia District, and one in each of Kayunga, Soroti, and Jinja Districts.

By the third year of this ministry, there were two churches in the Kampala area; a trainee had moved home to Rukungiri in western Uganda to do ministry; leaders from training centers in Soroti, Kayunga, and Bugiri returned to their villages; and an ongoing ministry on the Buvuma Islands had begun. Now, more than 110 Ugandans are being trained in nine training centers throughout the country and one in Sudan. Monthly trainings are presently held in Kampala, Soroti, Kayunga, Bugiri, Lugala, and Mukono on the Buvuma Islands for church planters and pastors who want to be part of Africa Gospel Church in Uganda.

Another exciting aspect of this ministry is how it has led to outreach in other areas, including healthcare, education, and literature production. For example, on the Buvuma Islands, WGM has expanded its ministries to include community-based healthcare through trained local health workers and education at Kikongo Primary School. In terms of literature production, the Bible and program materials used to train church planters and pastors are being printed by WGM missionaries in four languages: Luganda, Ateso, English, and Kumam.

Future Plans
With the Lord’s help, WGM is looking to open new training centers in the far northern, western, and eastern parts of Uganda. Some of these training centers are being established with hopes of training church planters and pastors to reach into Sudan, Rwanda, the Republic of Congo, and parts of Tanzania through the ministries of evangelism, church planting, and pastoral training.

Get Involved
Is the Lord leading you to support WGM Uganda’s church planters’/pastors’ training ministries through a financial gift? Take a look at the special funds listed below, and make a difference in the lives of national Christians today!

Pastoral Training Fund: For only $600 (or $300 per year), you can make it possible for a pastor to attend our two-year training program. WGM Uganda has more than 110 pastors in training with many others eager to join. We invite you to partner with us by contributing to the Pastoral Training Fund (account 21340). The pastors do not receive salaries from WGM, but transportation to the training center, meals, and printed lessons are provided. Please consider giving so this vital kingdom work can continue.

Church Development Fund: Your gift of $200 to $750 will help local congregations establish church buildings. Funds will be used to purchase a village building site (city plots are more costly), install a roof on a church building, provide a slab for a latrine, or construct benches for a sanctuary. WGM Uganda requires each congregation to contribute all they can toward the project, usually at least 20 percent and sometimes as much as 80 percent. Your donation to the Church Development Fund (account 31352) will make an immediate and tangible difference for a local congregation.

Training Centers Fund: WGM Uganda currently does church-planting and pastoral training in nine areas of Uganda and one in Sudan, but only one group meets in a permanent building. In the future, we hope to open several new training centers and construct at least five training center buildings. These multipurpose facilities will be used for training, worship, and other activities of a local church. The average cost of building a training center is $5,000 to $7,000. If you or your church would like to impact a whole region of Uganda with the gospel of Jesus Christ, consider building a training center through the Training Centers Fund (account 31346).
