Educational Ministries in Uganda
Ministry Info WGM missionaries in Uganda are involved in educational ministries to missionary kids, national children, and university students through Heritage International School, Kikongo Primary School, and Kampala International University.
Heritage International School Heritage International School (www.heritageinternationalschool.org) in Kampala, Uganda, was founded in 1994 to support Christian mission personnel serving in Uganda. The school’s goal is to provide a quality education for missionary kids and a strong Christian witness to students from non-Christian homes.
The mascot of Heritage is a lion, symbolizing the Lion of Judah, and the school’s name was chosen from Psalm 127:3. “Sons are a heritage from the Lord, children a reward from him.” (NIV)
While Heritage primarily offers programs for students in preschool through 12th grade, special classes are also offered to British students to keep them in step with the British educational system. The senior class of 2004 was the school’s first graduating class.
Approximately 200 students attend Heritage each year. The student body represents numerous missions agencies and denominations, and the children of expatriate businessmen and women are also free to attend. Students’ nationalities include Canadian, Ugandan, American, Eritrean, Indian, British, and Korean.
The school is operated by a board composed of representatives from these founding missions: Baptist Mission of Uganda, Church of God, Finnish Free Foreign Mission, Kinderhilfswerk, and Mission Aviation Fellowship. Heritage is also accredited by the Ministry of Education of Uganda.
Kampala International University Kampala International University in Kansanga, a rapidly growing suburb of Kampala, began operating as a private university in October 2001. The school offers both full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate programs. Weekly Bible studies for men and women, weekend and midweek church services(account 21343), and music outreach are regular parts of the ministries to the students and surrounding community. KIU is recognized and fully licensed by the National Council for Higher Education.
Kikongo Primary School Kikongo Primary School was started on the Buvuma Islands of Uganda in 2004 with the purpose of providing a quality primary school education in a Christian atmosphere for children in this remote area of the country. Reaching Kikongo Primary School from the mainland requires a two-hour boat ride. The school is located on a seven-acre plot that also provides space for WGM’s church-planters’ and pastors’ training and the island’s community-based healthcare office.
Currently, more than 200 children, including nearly 100 orphans, attend Kikongo Primary. The school reaches out to students who are in the American equivalent of first through seventh grade. However, since many of the children have not been able to attend school, their ages range from 5 to 15.
Following seventh grade, all Ugandan children who plan to continue their education must take a three-day external examination. Preparing for this exam requires experienced teachers, which are needed at Kikongo Primary School.
